How is CGPA calculated from SGPA?
The exact method is the credit-weighted average:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ semester credits
Worked example
- Semester 1: SGPA 8.0 × 20 credits = 160
- Semester 2: SGPA 8.6 × 22 credits = 189.2
- Semester 3: SGPA 7.8 × 20 credits = 156
- CGPA = (160 + 189.2 + 156) ÷ 62 = 8.15
If every semester has equal credits, this equals the simple average of your SGPAs. Keep the default credits equal for a simple average.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CGPA just the average of all SGPAs?
Only when every semester carries equal credits. Officially it is the credit-weighted average — semesters with more credits count more.
How many semesters count in the CGPA?
All completed semesters of your program count, from the first to the most recent.
My university shows a different CGPA — why?
Some universities compute CGPA from all individual courses rather than semester SGPAs, and rounding rules differ. The difference is usually under 0.02.
Can CGPA increase in later semesters?
Yes. Strong SGPAs in later (often higher-credit) semesters pull the weighted average up.
