How does the 75% attendance rule work?
Attendance % = (classes attended ÷ classes held) × 100. The useful formulas:
Classes you can miss = (attended ÷ 0.75) − total held
Classes to attend (if short) = (0.75 × held − attended) ÷ 0.25
Worked example
- 66 attended of 82 held → 80.49%. You can miss 6 more classes and stay at exactly 75%.
- 55 of 80 → 68.75%. You must attend the next 20 classes in a row to reach 75%.
Missing classes hurts fast, recovering is slow — every missed class needs three attended ones to balance it at the 75% line.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many classes can I bunk and keep 75% attendance?
Divide your attended classes by 0.75 and subtract the total held — the calculator does this instantly and updates as classes progress.
What happens if attendance falls below 75%?
Most universities detain you from the exam or require condonation (a fine or medical certificate) — rules vary, so check your handbook before it happens.
Do medical leaves count in the 75%?
Some institutions condone documented medical absence up to a limit (often 10%); it is a separate process, not automatic.
Is 75% counted per subject or overall?
Usually per subject — you can be detained in a single subject even with good overall attendance. Track your weakest subject with this calculator.
