GPA Calculator with 4th Subject Rule
The Bangladesh 4th subject rule confuses everyone — this calculator shows it clearly. Your optional (4th) subject adds ONLY its grade points above 2 as bonus. Enter your main-subject GPA situation and 4th subject grade to see the exact effect.

How does the 4th subject rule work?
The board formula, in one line:
GPA = (main points + max(0, 4th subject points − 2)) ÷ main subjects
Worked example
- 7 main subjects with 31.5 total points → GPA without 4th = 4.50
- 4th subject A+ (5.00) → bonus = 5 − 2 = 3.00 points
- GPA = (31.5 + 3) ÷ 7 = 4.93 — the 4th subject lifted it by 0.43
Bonus each 4th subject grade gives
| 4th subject grade | Points | Bonus added to total |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 | +3.00 |
| A | 4.00 | +2.00 |
| A- | 3.50 | +1.50 |
| B | 3.00 | +1.00 |
| C or below | ≤2.00 | 0 (never negative) |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 2 subtracted from the 4th subject points?
The boards treat 2.00 as the neutral baseline for the optional subject — only performance above pass level earns bonus points.
Can the 4th subject take my GPA above 5.00?
No. GPA is capped at 5.00 even when bonus points would push the average higher.
Which subject should I choose as 4th?
One you can score A+ in — Higher Math, Agriculture and Biology are popular because A+ there adds a full 3 bonus points.
Is the rule the same for SSC and HSC?
Yes — the same “points above 2” bonus applies to both, and to most group subjects boards designate as optional.
